Sade Perkins, a former appointee to the Houston Food Insecurity Board, caused controversy after her viral TikTok rant following catastrophic flooding at Camp Mystic, a Christian girls’ summer camp in Kerr County, Texas. The flooding hit near the Guadalupe River on July 4, killing dozens and left many families searching for their missing loved ones.
In the video, Perkins yelled, ‘I know I’m going to get cancelled for this, but Camp Mystic is a white‑only girls’ Christian camp,’ adding, ‘If this were a group of Hispanic girls … no one would give a f‑,’ then afterwards claimed media and public sympathy only emerged because the victims were white.
Perkins held her position on the Houston board through January, appointed by former Mayor Sylvester Turner. Responding to the backlash, Mayor John Whitmire said her comments ‘have no place in a decent society’ and confirmed he won’t reappoint her.
Her partner, Reverend Colin Bossen of Houston’s First Unitarian Universalist Church, also condemned the remarks. Bossen publicly apologized to victims’ families, the local community, and church members, clarifying that Perkins’ views don’t reflect the church’s values. ‘My partner Sade Perkins has made comments on social media regarding the horrific flooding that devastated Camp Mystic,’ Bossen said, ‘I want to be clear that I disavow her comments,’ clearly and publicly distancing himself from her TikTok.
Perkin’s comments continue to stir controversy in the wake of the tragic flooding and loss of life over July 4th weekend. She has since deleted the TikTok video. (RELATED: Anti-Expat Protests in Mexico City Draw Outrage and Claims of Hypocrisy)
