Starting with the season opener on August 30 against Western Michigan, University of Wisconsin (UW) will sell alcoholic beverages in the general seating areas at Camp Randall Stadium. This marks a significant shift for the state’s lone NCAA Division I football program, which had been one of three Big Ten schools not offering alcohol in general seating at home games.

Fans will now be able to purchase beer, wine, and pre-packaged products like hard seltzers at Camp Randall. The school also announced that alcohol sales will extend to the UW Field House for home women’s volleyball and men’s wrestling events, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinal.

“The option to purchase alcohol is common at collegiate athletic venues all over the country, and we’re glad that we can now offer it as part of the fan experience at Camp Randall,” said Chancellor Jennifer L. Mnookin. She emphasized that the plan balances this new opportunity with public safety.

To maintain order, fans will be limited to two drinks per person when ordering. Campus police will have a stronger presence, and a text line will be available for reporting issues. An ID, verified by an electronic scanner, will be required for anyone who looks under 40.

UW Athletics Director Chris McIntosh expressed confidence in the new policy, citing the successful implementation of alcohol sales at the Kohl Center and LaBahn Arena during the basketball and hockey seasons last year.
