Despite a shooting at a Trump rally, security plans for the upcoming Republican National Convention in Milwaukee remain unchanged.

According to law enforcement, there is “no articulated threat” against the RNC or its attendees, as stated by Michael E. Hensle of the FBI. Secret Service coordinator Audrey Gibson-Cicchino confirmed the sufficiency of the existing security measures, which were developed over 18 months, according to the Washington Post.

Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers has called for expanded gun restrictions near the convention. Currently, firearms are banned at the Fiserv Forum but are permitted elsewhere in downtown Milwaukee, in line with state laws that allow open carry without a permit and concealed carry with a permit. Gibson-Cicchino noted that while she hadn’t discussed the governor’s request, no changes to security zones are anticipated.

Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson highlighted a bipartisan effort that increased federal security funding for the event to $75 million. He assured the public of the city’s preparedness and emphasized a commitment to safety. Police Chief Jeffrey Norman echoed this sentiment, asserting confidence in their security strategy and readiness to adapt if necessary.

Delegates have expressed varying levels of concern following the shooting. While some, like Louisiana GOP chairman Derek Babcock, acknowledged heightened security, others, like Suzanne White, felt reassured by the visible police presence and their shared resolve. Overall, attendees are maintaining vigilance, trusting in the extensive security measures in place.
