Wisconsin Republicans Rally Behind Eric Hovde for Senate, Avoiding Primary Divisiveness
Wisconsin Republicans avoid a nasty primary fight, endorse Hovde, and focus all of their efforts to take out Sen. Tammy Baldwin

At the state GOP convention this past weekend, Wisconsin Republicans have coalesced behind Eric Hovde as their candidate for the U.S. Senate, avoiding the typically contentious primaries that have characterized recent statewide races. Unlike the past, where infighting among GOP candidates such as Tim Michels versus Rebecca Kleefisch, Kevin Nicholson versus Leah Vukmir, and Jennifer Dorow versus Daniel Kelly often weakened the party’s stance, the current election cycle has seen a remarkable consolidation of support around Hovde.

Eric Hovde, a Madison businessman and philanthropist, has managed to unite the various factions within the Wisconsin GOP. This consolidation is a stark contrast to previous years when Republican primaries were marked by fierce competition and division. The divisions hurt Republicans candidates in the general election and exacerbated the divisions in the various factions of the Wisconsin GOP. Hovde’s ability to bring together traditional conservatives, libertarians, and moderate Republicans speaks to his broad appeal.

Central to Hovde’s campaign is his focus on economic issues, particularly inflation and the cost of living. He has consistently laid the blame for these challenges at the feet of President Joe Biden and his opponent, incumbent Senator Tammy Baldwin. According to Hovde, Baldwin’s voting record—aligning with Biden 95% of the time—has contributed to the economic difficulties facing Wisconsinites. He argues that her strong support for Biden’s economic policies has exacerbated inflation and increased the financial burden on families across the state.

Hovde’s messaging resonates deeply with voters who are feeling the pinch of rising prices. By positioning himself as a champion for economic relief, he has tapped into the primary concern of many Wisconsin voters. His straightforward narrative that links Baldwin’s voting record to the current economic malaise has been effective in gaining support and drawing a stark contrast between himself and Baldwin.

The unity behind Hovde not only strengthens his candidacy but also enhances the Republican Party’s prospects in the upcoming general election. Without the distraction and division of a bruising primary battle, the GOP can direct its resources and focus on unseating Baldwin. This unified front is expected to be a significant advantage as the Republicans aim to reclaim the Senate seat.
