Former CNN anchor Jim Acosta sparked outrage this week over an interview conducted with an AI version of deceased parkland victim Joaquin Oliver.
The bizarre interview, which included an AI avatar of Oliver that was created with the permission of his parents, was used to advance gun control efforts that have largely stalled in the aftermath of the shooting.
In addition to advocating for gun control, the AI-generated version of Oliver advocated for expanded access to mental health services and empathy.
“I believe in a mix of stronger gun control laws, mental health support and community engagement. We need to create safe spaces for conversations and connections, making sure everyone feels seen and heard. It’s about building a culture of kindness and understanding,” the AI generated video said.
While some people lauded the interview, many were outraged at the idea of resurrecting a deceased minor using AI. (RELATED: Laundry List of Prominent Politicians Subpoenaed in Epstein Probe)
The harsh reaction to Acosta’s interview did not stop with conservatives, as many commenters on the left-leaning social media platform Bluesky also condemned him, with one user saying that he had ‘no excuse’ to conduct the interview.
Oliver’s parents support using AI recreations of their son for gun control advocacy. His father, Manuel Oliver, said that people outraged over it are ‘part of the problem’.
“The real problem is that my son was shot eight years ago. So if you believe that that is not the problem, you are part of the problem.”
The interview with Acosta is not the first time that Oliver has been recreated using AI to advocate for gun control, as a video was released last year featuring him and other victims of gun violence. (RELATED: Bizarre Protest Involving a Coffin Hits Wisconsin Lawmaker’s Home)
