On Saturday, Morgan Geyser, who was one of the two girls involved in the notorious 2014 “Slender Man”inspired stabbing, cut off her court mandated monitoring bracelet and disappeared from a group home in Madison, Wisconsin.

According to the Madison Police Department’s statement, Geyser was last seen at approximately 8 p.m. in the area of Kroncke Drive accompanied by an adult peer. Her whereabouts became unknown by Sunday morning when officials were notified of her absence.

Geyser, had been granted conditional release earlier this year following her confinement at the Winnebago Mental Health Institute, where she had been held since 2018 after pleading guilty to attempted first degree intentional homicide for the 2014 attack. She was ordered to live in a supervised group home and wear a monitoring device as part of her release conditions. The 2014 incident involved Geyser and her friend Anissa Weier, both age 12 at the time, who lured their classmate Payton Leutner into the woods, stabbed her 19 times, and left her for dead. They told investigators they believed the fictitious figure Slender Man would reward them for the attack. Leutner ended up surviving the attacl.

When the attack occurred, Geyser and Weier were tried as adults. Both were found not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect and committed to psychiatric institutions instead of serving traditional prison sentences. Weier was released in 2021. Geyser’s conditional release in 2025 came amid careful monitoring and debate over community placement.

The situation has raised concerns regarding the supervision of high risk releases, public safety, and the mechanisms in place for conditional release from psychiatric institutions. (RELATED: Wisconsin Senate Moves to Undo Evers’ 400-Year School Funding Boost)

As the search continues the details remain limited. Officials have not disclosed whether anyone else is suspected of assisting Geyser in her escape, or precisely when and how she removed the device. Her attorney has reportedly asked her to turn herself in.
